68 Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – View of the City of Steyr – Woodcut (c. 1550)

This detailed woodcut presents a panoramic bird's-eye view of "Die Statt Steyern" (The City of Steyr), located in Austria, depicted "nach alter form und gestalt abcontrefeiht" (gracefully depicted after the old form and shape). The print meticulously renders the fortified urban landscape, showcasing numerous buildings, a prominent river flowing alongside the city walls, and the surrounding hilly countryside. Defensive structures, towers, and bridges are clearly visible, illustrating the city's historical layout and strategic importance. This print is a characteristic example of 16th-century urban cartography, often found in comprehensive cosmographies of the period.
Sebastian Münster was a pioneering German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebrew scholar. He is most renowned for his monumental work, Cosmographia (first published in 1544), which was one of the earliest German-language descriptions of the world. This hugely popular and influential atlas-chronicle included hundreds of woodcut maps and city views, depicting places and cultures from across the globe. Münster's efforts significantly contributed to the spread of geographical knowledge during the Renaissance, making his Cosmographia a landmark achievement in publishing history.
