99 François Valentijn (1666–1727) – View of the Sugar Warehouse of Batavia – Copperplate Engraving (1726)

This detailed copperplate engraving presents a historical panoramic view of the Sugar Warehouse in Batavia (present-day Jakarta), as seen from the vicinity of the castle by the sea, looking towards the north-west. The scene captures the bustling waterfront along a canal or river, with the imposing sugar warehouse as a central feature amidst other colonial buildings. Numerous boats traverse the water, and figures populate the banks, contributing to the sense of an active trading port. This print serves as a valuable document of colonial trade, architecture, and urban life in 18th-century Dutch East Indies.
François Valentijn was a Dutch minister, naturalist, and prolific writer, whose monumental work Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (Old and New East-Indies) provided one of the most comprehensive accounts of the Dutch East India Company's presence in Asia. Published in eight volumes between 1724 and 1726, his work included extensive descriptions, maps, and illustrations, making it an invaluable source for the history, geography, and natural history of the region.
