42 Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Map of Obernburg am Main (Upper Boden City) – View with Allegorical Figures – Woodcut (1550)

This detailed woodcut print, titled "Obern Boden Statt und Bilder nach ihrer Gelegenhait das allerfleissigste Contrafact." (Upper Boden City and Pictures according to their location, most diligently depicted), originates from Sebastian Münster's monumental work, "Cosmographia Universalis" (Universal Cosmography). First appearing in the 1550 edition, this panoramic view captures the city of Obernburg am Main, nestled in a valley with hills, trees, and a river. Above the city, allegorical figures (angel-like beings) emerge from clouds, blending topographical representation with symbolic elements characteristic of Renaissance-era city views.
Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) was a highly influential German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebrew scholar. He is best known for his "Cosmographia Universalis," first published in 1544, which was one of the earliest and most popular German-language descriptions of the world. Münster's work combined geographical and historical information with ethnographic details and city views, making it a foundational text in the development of modern geography and cartography. The woodcuts in his Cosmographia were produced by various artists under his direction.
