This engraved map, titled "RIVER THAMES and MERCURY BAY NEW ZEALAND", depicts the River Thames and Mercury Bay on New Zealand’s North Island’s eastern coast, as charted during Captain James Cook’s first voyage. The map includes inset charts of Baye des Isles (Bay of Islands) and Baye de Tolaga (Tolaga Bay), featuring detailed navigational elements such as soundings, anchorages, and coastal contours.

Created posthumously following John Hawkesworth’s editorial work for the British Admiralty’s official expedition narrative, the map was published in the French edition of Relation des Voyages entrepris par ordre de Sa Majesté Britannique, printed in Paris by Hôtel de Thou between 1778 and 1785.

Engraved by Robert Bénard, who produced most plates for the French edition, it is a significant cartographic record of Pacific exploration.
