50 Jacobus van der Schley (1715–1779) after – Ground Plan of the Fortress of Coylan - Copperplate Engraving - c.1750s
This detailed 18th-century Dutch engraving presents a fortified layout of the Fortress of Coylan (now Kollam), located on the Malabar Coast of India. The plan illustrates a bastion-style fortification with detailed annotations for defensive structures, internal roads, trees, and buildings. The inset cross-section above shows the elevation of the fort’s walls, while the surrounding coastal waters feature Dutch sailing vessels, emphasizing the VOC’s maritime power in the region.
The engraving was created under the direction of Jacobus van der Schley, a Dutch engraver known for his work on the French travel account Histoire Générale des Voyages, edited by Antoine-François Prévost. The print was published by Pieter de Hondt, an influential printer and bookseller active in The Hague during the mid-18th century. Together, they produced some of the most accurate and decorative maps and views of the Dutch colonial world.
