This exceptional copperplate engraving by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi presents a detailed plan of the fortified city and fortress of Castelnuovo in Dalmatia (modern-day Herceg Novi, Montenegro). Created in 1687, the map highlights the strategic military layout, including the impressive fortifications, surrounding mountainous terrain, and naval presence in the Adriatic Sea. A decorative cartouche inscribed with the date and description emphasizes the map’s origin from direct military observation during late 17th-century conflicts.

Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi (1627–1691) was a master engraver and publisher based in Rome, renowned for his detailed maps and city plans during the Baroque period. His publishing house, Calcografia Camerale, was among the largest and most respected cartographic producers in Europe. De Rossi’s works are celebrated for their precision, artistic composition, and historical importance, making them key documents for understanding 17th-century European military geography.
