This dramatic etching illustrates the seventh plague of Egypt (Exodus 9:22–26), in which Moses, raising his staff to the heavens, unleashes a divine storm of thunder, hail, and fire upon the land of Egypt. The scene is rendered with intense theatricality: lightning splits the sky, hailstones rain down, and chaos erupts among people, animals, and overturned carts. The architecture in the background evokes ancient Egypt, while the foreground teems with expressive figures in flight or despair. The Israelites, by contrast, remain untouched, underscoring the selective nature of divine judgment.

Willem Goeree was a Dutch theologian, historian, and publisher known for his erudite biblical commentaries.

Jan Luyken, one of the most accomplished Dutch engravers of the late 17th century, was celebrated for his emotionally charged religious prints and meticulous attention to detail.
