173 François-Nicolas Martinet after Jacques de Sève – Le Hibou ou Moyen Duc – Engraving (18th Century)

This finely detailed 18th-century engraving depicts the Moyen Duc (Long-eared Owl), rendered with remarkable naturalism. The composition shows the owl perched on a rocky ledge with wings closed and alert expression, surrounded by foliage and architectural ruins. The plate is titled Le Hibou ou Moyen Duc and includes credits to the artist “De Sève del.” and engraver “F. Hubert sculp.”
The engraving belongs to the broader tradition of Enlightenment-era natural history illustration, and likely comes from a major ornithological or zoological series, such as Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle. Jacques de Sève was a prominent illustrator of Buffon’s works, known for combining scientific accuracy with atmospheric composition. F. Hubert, a skilled engraver, translated these detailed drawings into crisp copperplate prints.
