43 Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville – Map of the Eastern Roman Empire

This historical map titled Orbis Romani Pars Orientalis illustrates the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire, encompassing regions from the Balkans and Asia Minor to Egypt and the Levant. Rendered with classical Latin toponyms, the map reflects scholarly cartographic methods grounded in ancient sources and archaeological knowledge. It includes detailed place names, ancient regional divisions, and classical geography surrounding the Mare Internum (Mediterranean Sea), Pontus Euxinus (Black Sea), and Arabia Petraea. The clarity of engraving and refined hand-colouring exemplify the academic cartography of the Enlightenment.
Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville (1697–1782) was one of the most eminent French cartographers of the 18th century, widely regarded for his historical maps based on rigorous source criticism. Appointed Géographe du Roi, he produced maps that combined classical scholarship with geographic precision, reshaping the standards of historical cartography and influencing generations of historians and geographers.
