Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville (1697–1782) was one of the most eminent French cartographers of the 18th century, widely regarded for his historical maps based on rigorous source criticism. Appointed Géographe du Roi, he produced maps that combined classical scholarship with geographic precision, reshaping the standards of historical cartography and influencing generations of historians and geographers.
