23 Frederik de Wit – Map of Franconia / Circulus Franconicus – Engraving (c.1680)

This highly detailed black-and-white engraved map by Frederik de Wit depicts the Franconian Circle (Circulus Franconicus) in the Holy Roman Empire. The map encompasses numerous small principalities, ecclesiastical territories, and free imperial cities that made up the political geography of Franconia in the 17th century. Towns, rivers, forests, and borders are carefully rendered in dense typographic style.
The lower right corner features a monumental cartouche with armorial shields representing various ruling families and ecclesiastical seats of the Franconian territories, such as Würzburg, Bamberg, and Ansbach. The Imperial double-headed eagle is prominently displayed in the opposite corner. De Wit’s engraving remains uncoloured, preserving the crisp linework and cartographic precision typical of his workshop.
