This hand-coloured copperplate engraving features two species from the genus Ophidium – Ophidium barbatum, known as the Greater Cusk-eel, and Ophidium acculeatum, or the Lesser Cusk-eel. Each specimen is depicted with careful anatomical detail, emphasizing the elongated, eel-like forms, barbel appendages, and distinct lateral fin structure. Supplementary illustrations of their unique otolith structures are included alongside the figures, showcasing the scientific precision of Bloch’s ichthyological work.

Marcus Elieser Bloch was a pioneering German ichthyologist whose twelve-volume Ichthyologie stands as one of the most important ichthyological publications of the Enlightenment. Famed for its clarity, artistic elegance, and taxonomic rigor, the series remains a cornerstone of scientific illustration in natural history.
