161 François Valentijn – Swordfish and Fantastic Sea Creatures – Copperplate Engravig

This striking engraving from François Valentijn’s monumental Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën features two panels showcasing exotic marine life. The upper image depicts a dramatic swordfish with pronounced dorsal fin and elongated bill, captured with precision as it breaches the ocean’s surface. The lower composition presents a surreal combination of sea life, including a fantastical octopus entwined with a spiked mollusk shell and an armored fish resembling early imaginings of deep-sea creatures.
Valentijn’s work is both scientific and imaginative, merging natural observation with baroque aesthetics. Engraved by Dutch artist Jan Luyken or his circle, the plate exemplifies the curious blend of empirical research and visual spectacle that characterized 18th-century colonial natural history.
