This elegant botanical plate features several species and varieties of Convolvulus, commonly known as bindweed or morning glory. The illustration includes five botanical forms, carefully labelled: Convolvulus arvensis minor folio variegato, Convolvulus folio luteo pictum, Convolvulus erectus flore sulphureo, Convolvulus erectus flore albo, and Convolvulus erectus minor flore albo. The engraving captures each plant’s foliage, flower structure, and subtle colour differences with remarkable clarity. Numbered “No. 416” in the upper corner, this plate comes from the Dutch edition of Phytanthoza Iconographia, printed in Amsterdam by Zacharias Romberg.

Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and pioneering botanical illustrator. His monumental Phytanthoza Iconographia was one of the first large-scale publications to use mezzotint with colour printing, blending scientific taxonomy with artistic refinement. The work had wide influence across Europe and remains a foundational visual record of 18th-century botany.
