74 Jacob Cats (1577–1660) – What the Sow Does / The Piglets Must Pay For (Matters of State) – Engraving (1637)

This engaging engraving, part of a series titled "SAKEN VAN STATE" (Matters of State), depicts a bustling farmyard scene where a man attempts to control pigs that are overturning barrels. The accompanying Dutch motto, "Wat de feuge doet / moeten de biggen ontgelden." (What the sow does / the piglets must pay for), conveys a moral or political lesson. Originating from Jacob Cats's influential emblem books, likely from the "Trou-ringh" (The Wedding Ring) or its expanded editions published from 1637 onwards, this emblem uses an everyday scene to illustrate principles of leadership, accountability, and the consequences of actions, particularly those by those in power.
Jacob Cats (1577–1660) was a renowned Dutch poet, jurist, and politician, affectionately known as "Father Cats" due to his immense popularity and didactic writings. He served as Grand Pensionary of Holland and West Friesland. Cats is most famous for his emblem books, which skillfully combined allegorical images, Latin or Dutch mottos, and explanatory verses to offer practical and moral advice on a wide range of subjects, from personal conduct to matters of state and faith. His works were widely read and cherished throughout the Netherlands, profoundly influencing Dutch culture during the Golden Age.
