180 Jacob L’Admiral – Metamorphosis of Insects on Peach Branch – Engraving

This intricate copperplate engraving originates from Jacob L’Admiral’s Naauwkeurige waarneemingen, van veele gestaltverwisselende gekorvene diertjes, printed around 1744 in Amsterdam. The composition presents a peach branch with fruit and foliage, dramatically occupied by various insects at different developmental stages—from caterpillars and pupae to fully emerged moths. The engraving vividly documents the transformation cycle with scientific precision and artistic delicacy, emblematic of Enlightenment-era natural studies.
While most extant examples were published in hand-colored format, this is a rare monochrome edition that preserves the original linework and fine detailing of the artist.
