111 André de La Faye (fl. 1720–1760s) after P. Labat and Antoine François Prévost (1697–1763) – Tombs of the Kings of Guinea – Engraving (1746)

This detailed engraving, titled "TOMBEAUX DES ROIS DE GUINÉE" (Tombs of the Kings of Guinea), was engraved by André de La Faye and drawn from the accounts of P. Labat, compiled within the comprehensive works of Antoine François Prévost. Originating from Volume II of the "Histoire générale des voyages" (General History of Voyages), published in 1746, this print depicts a significant cultural scene: the burial grounds or a ritual site for kings in Guinea, West Africa. It offers an 18th-century visual record of African customs and funerary practices, reflecting European ethnographic interests during the Age of Exploration.
André de La Faye (fl. 1720–1760s) was a French engraver known for his contributions to various illustrated publications, including maps and ethnographic plates for prominent travelogues. Antoine François Prévost (1697–1763), often referred to as Abbé Prévost, was a prominent French novelist and historian, best known for compiling and editing the monumental 20-volume "Histoire générale des voyages," which brought together a vast collection of travel accounts and was richly illustrated with maps and ethnographic prints. Père Jean-Baptiste Labat (1663-1738) was a French missionary and traveler whose detailed accounts of the Caribbean and West Africa served as important sources for later compilers like Prévost.
