89 François Valentijn (1666–1727) – Princess Taken by Lion – Ceylon, Sri Lanka – Copperplate Engraving (1724-1726)

This scarce original antique print depicts the princess taken by a lion in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), a scene related to Vijaya's grandmother. It is a copperplate engraving/etching on hand-laid (verge) paper, originating from the monumental work by François Valentijn: "Oud en nieuw Oost-Indiën, vervattende een naaukeurige en uitvoerige verhandelinge van Nederlands mogentheyd in die gewesten" (Old and New East-Indies, including an accurate and extensive description of Dutch / VOC controlled territories). The work was published in Dordrecht and Amsterdam by J. van Braam and G. onder de Linden between 1724 and 1726. The engraving was made by an anonymous engraver after Valentijn.
François Valentijn (1666–1727) was a Dutch minister, naturalist, and author renowned for his extensive travels and detailed documentation of the Dutch East Indies. His multi-volume work "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën" is a comprehensive account of the history, geography, ethnography, and natural history of the region, and it is richly illustrated with numerous engravings and maps.
