This historical engraving shows the fortified city of Batavia (modern-day Jakarta) during the siege of 1629 by Sultan Agung of Mataram. The detailed plan captures the VOC fortifications, canals, bastions, and layout of the Dutch stronghold. Integrated within a page of Dutch text, the image formed part of François Valentijn’s monumental work on the Dutch East Indies. It presents both strategic and narrative insight into one of the key defensive episodes in the VOC's history in Java.

François Valentijn (1666–1727) was a Dutch minister, naturalist, and historian who spent significant time in the East Indies. He is best known for his multi-volume work "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën," a rich source of information on the geography, flora, fauna, and colonial affairs of Southeast Asia. His illustrations and cartographic plates, often based on VOC records, remain vital for the study of 17th- and 18th-century colonial history.
