97 Giacomo Lauro – Domus Aurea of Emperor Nero with Adjacent Colosseum Site and Maecenas Gardens – c. 1615

This detailed architectural engraving by Giacomo Lauro presents a reconstructed view of the Domus Aurea, Nero’s Golden House, situated on the Oppian Hill. The elaborate composition features the imperial palace in the foreground, framed by colonnades and classical facades, while the upper part of the engraving shows the stagnum (artificial lake) later replaced by the Colosseum, along with the gardens of Maecenas. Lauro’s rendering visualizes Rome’s vanished imperial grandeur with imaginative symmetry and monumental scale, echoing Renaissance ideals of antiquity.
Giacomo Lauro (active c.1580–1640) was an Italian engraver and publisher based in Rome. He is best known for Antiquae Urbis Splendor, a major series of engravings that imaginatively reconstructed ancient Roman landmarks. Lauro's works blend historical research with architectural fantasy and reflect the 17th-century fascination with classical antiquity.
