This architectural engraving by Giacomo Lauro depicts the Domus and Baths of the Gordian emperors, located along the ancient Via Praenestina in Rome. The composition presents an idealized reconstruction of the imperial complex with its symmetrically aligned porticos, domed structures, and elevated central pavilion. Statues and ornamental details emphasize the grandeur associated with Roman imperial architecture, characteristic of Lauro’s antiquarian reconstructions. This plate belongs to Lauro’s Antiquae Urbis Splendor, a major series visualizing lost monuments of Ancient Rome.

Giacomo Lauro (active c.1580–1640) was an Italian engraver and publisher based in Rome. He is best known for Antiquae Urbis Splendor, a multi-decade project reconstructing ancient Roman buildings in architectural engravings. Combining Renaissance classicism with scholarly imagination, Lauro’s work remains a vivid visual archive of Rome’s lost monuments.
