94 Giacomo Lauro – Amphitheatre of Statilius Taurus near the Church of the Holy Cross, Jerusalem – c. 1615

This architectural engraving by Giacomo Lauro depicts the ancient amphitheatre of Statilius Taurus near the Church of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, as imagined in the early 17th century. Lauro’s depiction highlights the structure’s monumental arched façade and semicircular seating, rendered with precise linear perspective and classical detail. His engravings sought to reconstruct the grandeur of Roman antiquity based on historical texts and Renaissance architectural imagination.
Giacomo Lauro (active c. 1580–1640) was an Italian engraver and publisher based in Rome. Best known for his series Antiquae Urbis Splendor, he produced a large body of imaginary reconstructions of ancient Roman architecture. Though often speculative, his engravings had a significant influence on visualizing antiquity during the Baroque period.
