This fine hand-colored engraving by François-Nicolas Martinet presents two species of shrikes perched against a pale naturalistic backdrop. On the left is the Pie-grièche rousse à tête noire, du Sénégal with rufous plumage and a dark head, while the right features the Pie-grièche huppée, du Canada, characterized by its vibrant chestnut back, pale underparts, and distinctive crest. The plate exhibits Martinet’s signature blend of scientific precision and artistic elegance, framed with a bright yellow border.

François-Nicolas Martinet (1731–1800) was a distinguished French engraver and illustrator celebrated for his extensive work on natural history subjects, especially birds. Commissioned by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, for Histoire Naturelle, Martinet’s engravings combined anatomical accuracy with aesthetic clarity, helping define the visual language of Enlightenment-era zoological publications.
