This finely engraved map titled Gelriae, Cliviae, Finitimorumque Locorum Verissima Descriptio presents the provinces of Gelderland and Cleves in the eastern Low Countries, bordering modern-day Netherlands and Germany. Based on a map by the cartographer Christian Sgrothen, it meticulously depicts rivers, cities, forests, and provincial borders in rich typographic detail. Notable cities such as Arnhem, Nijmegen, Cleves, and Zutphen are clearly marked. The decorative title cartouche and ship vignette on the Zuyder Zee are characteristic of Ortelius’s visual style and engraverial elegance.

Abraham Ortelius was a pioneering Flemish cartographer whose Theatrum is regarded as the first modern atlas, setting the standard for mapmaking, design, and historical geography in the Renaissance.
