56 Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598), after Aegidius Tschudi and others – Maps of Gallia Narbonensis and Savoy & Burgundy – Copperplate Engravings – c. 1595

This double-page folio from Abraham Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum presents two finely detailed regional maps of ancient and modern France. The left panel, titled Galliae Narbonensis Ora Maritima Recens Descripta, depicts the coastline of southern Gaul (modern-day Provence and Languedoc), extending from Marseille to the Pyrenees, including Roman references and classical place names along the Mare Gallicum (Mediterranean).
The right panel, Sabaudiae et Burgundiae Comitum Exactissima Descriptio, is a map of Savoy and Burgundy in eastern France, based on the work of the Swiss humanist and topographer Aegidius Tschudi. This map offers an intricate rendering of rivers, towns, and mountain ranges extending from Geneva and Lyon to the Jura and the western Alps.
These maps reflect Ortelius’s practice of combining ancient geography with Renaissance cartographic accuracy, accompanied by decorative cartouches and Latin titles.
