58 Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598), after Jean de l’Ancre & Gabriele Simeoni – Maps of Bituriges (Berry) and Limaniae – Copperplate Engravings – c. 1595

This double-page folio from Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum features two distinct regional maps of France. On the left is Regnionis Biturigum Exactissima Descriptio, a detailed map of Berry (centered around Bourges), originally drawn by Jean de l’Ancre (Joannes Calamaeus). It is densely annotated with towns, rivers, and forested areas, illustrating the administrative heart of central France. On the right is Limaniae Topographia, a map of the Limagne plain and surrounding areas, attributed to Gabriele Simeoni, showing mountain ranges, rivers, and key towns in the Auvergne region.
Both maps exhibit Ortelius’s signature cartographic design, including ornamental title cartouches, scale bars, and precise geographic detail. They were included in later editions of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Ortelius’s groundbreaking atlas first published in 1570 and widely reissued into the early 17th century.
Abraham Ortelius was a pioneering Flemish cartographer whose Theatrum is regarded as the first modern atlas, setting the standard for mapmaking, design, and historical geography in the Renaissance.
