91 Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598) – Title Page of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum – Copperplate Engraving – 1570

This is the iconic engraved title page of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas, compiled and published by Abraham Ortelius in 1570. The architectural frame presents the Latin title “THEATRUM ORBIS TERRARUM” inscribed in a classical cartouche surrounded by allegorical figures. At the top, a crowned female personification of Geography sits enthroned with dividers and a globe, flanked by celestial spheres. Flanking the central text are figures representing classical virtues and mythological themes, including reclining river gods and busts of antique sculpture.
The composition reflects Renaissance ideals of harmony, knowledge, and the revival of antiquity. As a frontispiece to Ortelius’s revolutionary work, it sets the tone for a book that would fundamentally transform geographical understanding in early modern Europe.
Abraham Ortelius, a Flemish cartographer and scholar based in Antwerp, was the first to systematically assemble maps by various authors into a unified format with commentary. His Theatrum Orbis Terrarum is widely regarded as the first true atlas and was issued in numerous editions and languages through the 17th century.
