This double-page spread features two detailed regional maps from the famed Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas, edited and published by Abraham Ortelius. On the left is Patavini Territorii Corographia, a map of the territory surrounding Padua (Patavium), drawn by Giacomo Gastaldi and densely populated with rivers, towns, and political boundaries in northern Italy. On the right is Apuliae quae olim Iapygia, a map of Apulia in southern Italy, showing coastal cities, mountainous terrain, and decorative nautical elements including ships and sea monsters.

Both maps exhibit the characteristic ornamentation of Ortelius’s atlas: strapwork cartouches, Latin inscriptions, and elegant engraving style. The work combines classical geographic knowledge with Renaissance humanist scholarship, offering one of the earliest coherent cartographic representations of Italy’s regional divisions.

Giacomo Gastaldi (c. 1500–1566) was a Venetian cartographer and engineer known for his pioneering regional maps of Italy. Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598) was a Flemish geographer and map publisher who compiled and edited the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum in 1570, often considered the first true modern atlas.
