83 Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Laocoön and His Sons – Woodcut from Cosmographia – 16th Century (c. 1550)

This expressive woodcut depicts the famous classical sculpture group Laocoön and His Sons, showing the Trojan priest and his two sons being attacked by sea serpents. The muscular figures writhe in agony, capturing the high drama and anatomical intensity characteristic of Renaissance interpretations of ancient art. The scene is surrounded by German text and appears on page 400 of Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia, in one of the Latin or German editions published circa 1550.
Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia, first published in 1544 and reissued in multiple editions through the late 16th century, was among the first works to combine modern cartographic knowledge with city views, history, and ethnographic commentary. Its woodcuts offered early modern Europeans a visual gateway to the geography of the known world.
