62 Johann Ludwig Gottfried / Theodor de Bry – Marchio Pizarrus à Jacobo Almagro juniore… caeditur – Copperplate Engraving – 1633

This intense copperplate engraving depicts the dramatic assassination of Francisco Pizarro by the followers of Diego de Almagro the Younger (Jacobo Almagro junior). The scene unfolds within Pizarro’s own residence, where a sudden and violent attack breaks out. Spanish soldiers storm through columns and arches, swords drawn, while Pizarro and his men attempt to resist. Bodies fall, and chaos erupts throughout the architectural space. The Latin caption reads: Marchio Pizarrus à Jacobo Almagro juniore, & ejus confoederatis, in propriis aedibus caeditur – “Marquis Pizarro is killed in his own house by Jacobo Almagro the Younger and his allies.”
The engraving was published in the 1633 edition of Newe Welt und Americanische Historien, continuing Theodor de Bry’s America series with editorial contributions by Johann Ludwig Gottfried. This edition expanded the series’ scope with moral and political commentary on the violent aftermath of the conquest of Peru.
