61 Johann Ludwig Gottfried / Theodor de Bry – Jacobus Almagrus à Ferdinando Pizzarro in vincula conjicitur – Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving – 1633

This hand-colored copperplate engraving illustrates the imprisonment and execution of Diego de Almagro (Jacobus Almagrus), following his defeat by the forces of Hernando (Ferdinand) Pizarro. The central scene shows Spanish soldiers restraining and leading Almagro through a plaza, where he is ultimately strangled and publicly beheaded. The composition, rich in dramatic gesture and architectural detail, captures the violent internal power struggles among Spanish conquistadors after the conquest of Peru. The Latin caption and the accompanying letterpress text describe the circumstances of Almagro’s capture, incarceration, and execution.
Published in the 1633 German edition of Newe Welt und Americanische Historien, this engraving belongs to the extended America series originated by Theodor de Bry. It was later expanded and edited by Johann Ludwig Gottfried, who added historical commentary in Latin and German to reach a broader scholarly and popular audience.
