60 Johann Ludwig Gottfried / Theodor de Bry – Prælium inter Hispanos & Indos comissum ad urbem Cuzco – Copperplate Engraving – 1633
This dramatic copperplate engraving illustrates the fierce battle between Spanish conquistadors and indigenous Inca forces outside the city of Cuzco. The composition shows mounted Spaniards charging into densely packed native ranks with raised lances, while in the background the walled city of Cuzco stands as the contested stronghold. The Latin title, Prælium inter Hispanos & Indos comissum ad urbem Cuzco, translates to “Battle between the Spanish and Indians near the city of Cuzco.” The lower half of the sheet contains a block of letterpress text in Latin, elaborating on the events surrounding the uprising against the Spanish occupation and the role of Manco Inca Yupanqui.
This plate appeared in the 1633 German edition of Newe Welt und Americanische Historien, based on America, the influential series first published by Theodor de Bry. It combines vivid visual narrative with historical documentation of early Spanish colonial campaigns in South America.
Johann Ludwig Gottfried (1584–1633) edited the German-language continuation of the America series, incorporating earlier de Bry plates with new commentary. Theodor de Bry (1528–1598) was a Flemish-German engraver whose works profoundly shaped early European imagery of the New World.
