59 Johann Ludwig Gottfried / Theodor de Bry – Cuzco, totius regni Peruanì urbs opulentissima, ab Hispanis occupatur – Copperplate Engraving – 1633

This early 17th-century copperplate engraving depicts the violent conquest of Cuzco, the wealthy capital of the Inca Empire, by Spanish forces. The chaotic scene is filled with graphic close combat between conquistadors and indigenous warriors, set amidst stone-built Inca architecture. The Latin caption identifies this as the moment when “Cuzco, the richest city of the whole kingdom of Peru, is occupied by the Spanish.” Beneath the image is a column of Latin text that narrates the historical context of Francisco Pizarro’s campaign. This plate was published in the 1633 German edition of Newe Welt und Americanische Historien, based on Theodor de Bry’s celebrated America series.
Johann Ludwig Gottfried (1584–1633) was a German historian and editor who collaborated with the de Bry family to produce richly illustrated accounts of European expeditions in the New World. Theodor de Bry (1528–1598), a Flemish-German engraver, was instrumental in shaping early European visual perceptions of the Americas through his meticulously detailed copperplate prints.
