65 Charles Blunt (1803–1878) – Cancer (Zodiacal Constellation) – Hand-Colored Lithograph – 1845

This hand-colored lithograph depicts the constellation Cancer rendered in the form of a celestial crab, its body composed of faintly glowing stars against a black night sky. The stars are delicately highlighted in yellow and white, representing their varying brightness. Numbered “No. 41” in the lower left, the plate comes from The Beauty of the Heavens, an educational publication by Charles F. Blunt dedicated to the artistic visualization of the constellations. The dark background, minimalist style, and symbolic figuration reflect early Victorian interest in both astronomy and visual instruction.
Charles F. Blunt was a 19th-century British author and popular science educator whose works helped bring astronomy to the general public. His charts and celestial diagrams combined scientific accuracy with a poetic, accessible visual format.
