125 Daniel Meisner (1585–1625) – Schombock in Hungary: Amor Affectus Potentissimus – Copperplate Engraving – c. 1625

This allegorical city view features the Hungarian fortress town of Schombock (today Šomoška, Slovakia) with a powerful emblematic motif: a chariot pulled by lions, carrying Cupid and a noble couple. The Latin motto Amor affectus potentissimus ("Love is the most powerful affection") reinforces the message of emotional force over brute strength. The verses below—written in Latin and German—highlight the taming power of love, even over wild beasts. Plate H72 is from Daniel Meisner’s emblem book Thesaurus Philo-Politicus, combining moral reflections with idealized depictions of European cities.
Daniel Meisner (1585–1625) was a Bohemian-born poet and publisher known for his emblematic masterpiece Thesaurus Philo-Politicus, which illustrated cities of the world paired with philosophical or moralizing captions. First published in the early 17th century and continued after his death, the series remains one of the most distinctive fusions of topography and emblematic art in Baroque Europe.
