146 Frederick de Wit (1629–1706) – Studies of Goats and Ibex – Copperplate Engraving – Late 17th Century

This copperplate engraving depicts a series of goat and ibex studies rendered with anatomical clarity and pastoral charm. In the upper section, a long-haired mountain goat is shown from the rear and front, highlighting its heavy coat and large spiraling horns. Below, a sleeker goat is portrayed in profile, feeding on surrounding foliage. The balanced layout and emphasis on zoological observation reflect the influence of early modern natural history practices and may have served as a model for artistic or scientific instruction.
The engraving is attributed to the Amsterdam workshop of Frederick de Wit, known primarily for cartographic work but also for producing instructional figure and animal studies. The fine linework and framing are consistent with Dutch engravings of the late 17th century.
