115 Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1757–1834) – Alten Gaard – Aquatint – 1801

This atmospheric aquatint depicts Alten Gaard (present-day Alta), a trading and missionary settlement on the Altafjord in northern Norway. The foreground features cultivated fields and clustered wooden buildings, including the prominent main house of the estate, while the midground opens into a vast fjord landscape flanked by steep forested slopes and distant mountain ridges. The sky is filled with layered cloud formations, balancing the composition’s horizontal movement with dramatic tonal contrast. Plate LIII originates from Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand’s renowned publication Voyage pittoresque au Cap Nord, documenting his 1799 expedition to the far north.
Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1757–1834) was a Swedish statesman, general, and artist whose 18th-century journey to northern Scandinavia resulted in one of the earliest comprehensive visual records of the region. His aquatints in Voyage pittoresque au Cap Nord blended scientific observation with romanticized Nordic landscape, earning the work enduring historical and artistic significance.
