113 Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand(1757–1834) – Interior of the Island of Magerø near the North Cape – Aquatint – 1801

This striking aquatint presents the dramatic interior of Magerø (Magerøya), the arctic island that hosts the North Cape plateau in northern Norway. The view captures steep, looming cliffs encircling a serene glacial lake, with darkened skies and sharply modeled terrain evoking the sublime character of the Nordic wilderness. Designated as Plate XLIX in the series, this image belongs to Voyage pittoresque au Cap Nord, the celebrated visual travel record compiled by A. F. Skjöldebrand following his 1799 expedition into the arctic territories.
Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1757–1834) was a Swedish nobleman, military officer, and artist whose expedition to the North Cape produced one of the earliest pictorial documentations of arctic Scandinavia. His Voyage pittoresque au Cap Nord combines scientific interest, romantic topography, and the aesthetic sensibility of Enlightenment-era landscape art.
