112 Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1757–1834) – Bay and Mountain near the North Cape – Aquatint – 1801

This atmospheric aquatint depicts a dramatic coastal scene near the North Cape (Cap Nord), Norway’s northernmost promontory. Deep contrasts of light and shadow enhance the ruggedness of the cliffs and the sweeping motion of the sea. The composition guides the eye from a narrow foreground path toward the luminous horizon, punctuated by towering rock formations under a layered sky. Plate XLVIII comes from Voyage pittoresque au Cap Nord, the celebrated expedition publication by A. F. Skjöldebrand, combining Enlightenment scientific observation with Nordic romanticism.
Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1757–1834) was a Swedish count, statesman, and artist. Known for his expedition to northern Scandinavia in the late 18th century, he documented landscapes and cultural scenes through engravings and aquatints.
