5 Ambroise Tardieu (1788–1841) – Map of the Army of Grisons and the Valais Region – Copperplate Engraving – c. 1825

This topographical map by Ambroise Tardieu details the mountainous region encompassing the Grisons (Graubünden), Valais, and surrounding valleys along the Swiss-Italian border. Titled Carte pour servir à l’intelligence des marches de l’armée des Grisons, the map was designed to support military interpretation of troop movements and alpine access routes. Rendered in fine shaded relief, the terrain is captured with meticulous attention to elevation, ridge lines, and natural barriers. The engraving reflects early 19th-century military cartography during the post-Napoleonic era and exemplifies Tardieu’s precise drafting style.
