4 Ambroise Tardieu (1788–1841) – Map of the Splügen Pass and Mont Tonale – Copperplate Engraving – c. 1825

This engraved topographical map by Ambroise Tardieu presents three detailed plans of alpine military routes across the Swiss-Italian border region. The central map depicts the Passage du Mont Splügen, while the two inset panels illustrate Retreat Positions on Mont Tonale and Positions at the Bridge of Rhofo. Executed with shaded relief and precise contour rendering, the map emphasizes strategic elevation, mountain passes, and roads relevant to 19th-century military maneuvers. Tardieu’s clear and systematic engraving style reflects both scientific cartographic principles and Napoleonic-era strategic concerns.
Ambroise Tardieu (1788–1841) was a prominent French cartographer, engraver, and publisher. Nephew of famed geographer Pierre Tardieu, he produced atlases, scientific illustrations, and historical maps that were widely used in educational and military contexts. His crisp, technically detailed engravings represent the transition from Enlightenment-era mapmaking to 19th-century scientific precision.
