6 Frederick de Wit (1629–1706) – Map of Northern Italy and Southern Germany – Copperplate Engraving – c. 1680

This detailed copperplate engraving presents a wide swath of Central Europe, spanning from the Gulf of Venice in the southeast to the upper Rhine and parts of Gaul in the northwest. The map focuses on Northern Italy, the Tyrol, Bavaria, and adjacent regions of the Holy Roman Empire, meticulously labeling cities, rivers, mountain ranges, and territorial boundaries. A decorative cartouche in the lower left, flanked by armored figures, includes a Latin dedication and a scale bar, emphasizing the military and political relevance of the geography. The upper margin features coats of arms and a reference table of ruling houses and regional affiliations.
Frederick de Wit (1629–1706) was a leading Dutch cartographer, engraver, and publisher based in Amsterdam. His firm issued atlases, wall maps, and separate-sheet maps that blended scientific accuracy with ornate baroque design.
