11 Frederick de Wit (1629–1706) – Map of the Electorate of Cologne – Copperplate Engraving – c. 1680

This finely engraved map illustrates the Archiepiscopatus et Electoratus Coloniensis, or Electorate of Cologne, a key ecclesiastical principality of the Holy Roman Empire. Stretching along the Rhine River and encompassing territories around Cologne, Bonn, and Münster, the map provides dense geographic detail, including towns, rivers, forests, and mountain ranges. The richly allegorical title cartouche in the upper right features cherubs holding ecclesiastical and heraldic symbols, while a secondary cartouche with scale and mileage appears in the lower left. Executed with precision and clarity, this work reflects the cartographic excellence of Frederick de Wit's Amsterdam workshop in the late 17th century.
