8 Nicolaes Visscher II (1649–1702) – Map of the Duchy of Lorraine – Copperplate Engraving – c. 1690

This highly detailed copperplate map presents the Duchy of Lorraine (Lotharingiae Ducatus) and adjacent territories, including the duchies of Bar, Metz, Toul, and Verdun. Originally published in Amsterdam by Nicolaes Visscher II, the map shows a dense web of cities, rivers, and provincial borders across northeastern France and parts of the Holy Roman Empire. The lower-left corner features a richly allegorical cartouche, with personifications of geography and abundance, and a scale bar integrated into the composition. Engraved with typographic precision, the map reflects both the political fragmentation and cartographic sophistication of the late 17th century.
Nicolaes Visscher II (1649–1702) was a Dutch engraver, publisher, and mapmaker who inherited the prestigious Visscher cartographic workshop in Amsterdam. As part of a lineage of influential cartographers, his work helped establish the Dutch Golden Age of mapmaking, marked by technical refinement, decorative flourish, and widespread dissemination through atlases and
composite collections.
