79 Frederick de Wit (1629–1706) – Standing Female Nude by Drapery – Copperplate Engraving – Late 17th Century

This finely executed copperplate engraving presents a study of a nude female figure standing near a draped table, her body turned in contrapposto with one arm resting on gathered fabric. The composition emphasizes classical proportions, musculature, and chiaroscuro modeling, reflecting the influence of academic figure drawing and classical sculpture. The background features a theatrical curtain and sketchy wall lines, reinforcing the sense of staged artistic study. The plate bears the monogram “F.d.W.” in the lower right, indicating the work’s attribution to Frederick de Wit or his workshop during the late Dutch Golden Age.
Frederick de Wit (1629–1706) was a leading Dutch cartographer and publisher whose Amsterdam-based press produced not only maps and atlases but also prints for artistic and academic purposes. While primarily known for cartographic output, his studio also issued figure studies and instructional engravings used by painters and draughtsmen across Europe.
