166 Frederick de Wit (1629–1706) – Study of Ducks and Doves – Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving – Late 17th Century

This rare zoological engraving features four studies of birds, including two ducks and two species of pigeons or doves, arranged within a divided plate. The rendering emphasizes anatomical accuracy and naturalistic postures, capturing both standing and resting poses. The birds are set against a neutral background, allowing for close observation of plumage detail and silhouette. Fine hatchwork and subtle hand coloring suggest the plate was intended for natural history or artistic instruction. Likely produced in the late 17th century, the work is attributed to Dutch cartographer and publisher Frederick de Wit, whose workshop also issued decorative and educational prints.
