139 Emile Baudement (1821–1862) – Mürztal Bull – Plate L from Les races bovines au concours universel agricole de Paris – Heliogravure – 1861

This heliogravure illustrates the Mürztal bull, a representative of the Styrian mountain cattle breed native to the Mürz Valley region in Austria. Displayed in profile against a rural backdrop, the bull's strong frame and alert stance reflect the breed’s historical utility in both dairy and draft work. As Pl. L in the series, this image was part of Emile Baudement’s zoological documentation for the 1856 Universal Agricultural Exhibition in Paris, where key European cattle types were systematically recorded through the collaborative use of photography and engraving.
Emile Baudement (1821–1862) was a French zootechnician and agricultural writer who played a key role in the 19th-century classification of livestock breeds. His major work, Les races bovines, compiled systematic studies of cattle presented at the 1856 Universal Agricultural Competition in Paris. Baudement’s contributions combined empirical observation with state-supported research and helped lay the groundwork for modern animal husbandry in France.
