140 Emile Baudement (1821–1862) – Mürztal Cow – Plate LI from Les races bovines au concours universel agricole de Paris – Heliogravure – 1861

This heliogravure represents the Mürztal cow, a breed originating from the mountainous region of Styria in Austria. Posed on a high ridge with panoramic views of the alpine landscape, the animal is shown with distinctive features typical of the Mürztal type: a long body, moderate musculature, and alert head posture. The plate (Pl. LI) was issued as part of the comprehensive visual documentation in Les races bovines au concours universel agricole de Paris en 1856, where Emile Baudement coordinated early photographic techniques and engraving to catalog Europe's principal cattle breeds.
Emile Baudement (1821–1862) was a French zootechnician and agricultural writer who played a key role in the 19th-century classification of livestock breeds. His major work, Les races bovines, compiled systematic studies of cattle presented at the 1856 Universal Agricultural Competition in Paris. Baudement’s contributions combined empirical observation with state-supported research and helped lay the groundwork for modern animal husbandry in France.
