This anatomical copperplate engraving, labeled TAB. DD, presents four detailed studies of the human back musculature, shown in various stages of dissection. The figures are seated or slightly turned, exposing layers of muscles, tendons, and vertebral structures with precise lettered references for explanatory legend. The clarity and anatomical accuracy reflect the educational purpose of Stephanus Blankaart’s De Nieuw-Hervormde Anatomia, a Dutch-language medical manual intended to make anatomical knowledge more accessible to physicians and surgeons outside of the Latin tradition.

Stephanus Blankaart (1650–1704) was a pioneering Dutch anatomist and physician known for his contributions to vernacular medical education. His anatomical works featured high-quality engravings paired with clear textual descriptions, and were instrumental in training generations of medical practitioners in the Dutch Republic. He played a central role in the shift toward practical, observational anatomy during the late 17th century.
