The engraving served as the title image for a 1712 Amsterdam edition of Alle de Wercken van den Heere Jacob Cats, published by Jan van Hekeren, Nicolaas ten Hoorne, Anthony Hasebroek, Andries van Damme, and others. It exemplifies the grandeur of Dutch Golden Age book design, uniting portraiture with emblematic allegory in celebration of national literary heritage.
Jacob Cats (1577–1660) was one of the most influential writers and politicians of the Dutch Golden Age. He became famous for his didactic poems and emblem books that promoted moral values, family harmony, and civic virtue. His accessible writing style earned him enduring popularity across generations. In addition to his literary success, Cats served as Grand Pensionary of Holland, acting as a leading statesman in the Dutch Republic. His collected works, often issued in richly illustrated volumes, became household staples and cemented his legacy as a national moralist.
