135 Jan Goeree – Romulus and Remus with the She-Wolf – Engraving

This historical engraving by Dutch artist Jan Goeree illustrates the foundational Roman myth of Romulus and Remus being suckled by a she-wolf near the banks of the Tiber. The scene captures the moment with expressive clarity—two infants sheltered by the fierce maternal beast in a rocky, wooded landscape, symbolizing divine protection and the destined rise of Rome. The composition is executed with classical balance and ornamental finesse, reflecting Goeree’s training under Gerard de Lairesse.
The engraving was published in Beschryving van Oud en Nieuw Rome (1704), a richly illustrated work by François Desseine and François Halma that explored the mythology, history, and topography of ancient and contemporary Rome. Goeree’s contributions to the volume are distinguished by their architectural clarity and refined mythological iconography.
